It's time like this when you earn the money you charge for servicing a boiler. I was called because they could not light the boiler and it was getting a little chilly. I had serviced this boiler some five years ago when the previous owners owned the building, since that date it showed signs of a safety check, I presumed this because of the used smoke pellets left behind. (you can just see one bottom left)

What you can see with the bottom photo is the remnants from the heat exchanger made into flakes of rust. Both of the burner bars were covered with dust and rust flakes and the reason the boiler would not light was because the pilot light was also covered.

Boilers need to be serviced and checked each year especially this type where you can see it has a chimney because if it fails it could kill you.

If you look at the top photo you will notice a central heating pump where the instructions were not read. If your pump is this way up call a registered plumber.
